The IIA Releases New Practice Guide on Demonstrating the Core Principles for the Professional Practice of Internal Auditing

The IIA’s Core Principles for the Professional Practice of Internal Auditing are part of the IPPF’s Mandatory Guidance. The principles validate the effectiveness, credibility, and value of the internal audit activity within an organization’s governance structure.

This new practice guide explains the concepts embodied in the Core Principles and describes enablers, or specific ways the internal audit activity can demonstrate them to set a cultural tone for the organization. The guide also identifies measurable key indicators that empower the internal audit activity to define, measure, assess, and monitor demonstration of each principle.

By striving to adhere to the Core Principles, the internal audit activity will also achieve the Mission of Internal Audit: “To enhance and protect organizational value by providing risk-based and objective assurance, advice, and insight.” Performing at a level consistent with each of the 10 core principles can help the internal audit activity achieve trusted advisor status in its stakeholders’ eyes.

Topics include:

  • Understanding how the Core Principles link to the work of internal audit, such as developing and improving work deliverables.
  • Exploring measurable criteria for assessing achievement of Core Principles in the context of the IPPF.
  • Improving communications with stakeholders by using practical and easy-to-understand examples that resonate.
  • Providing potential consequences of failure to achieve Core Principle behaviors.
