‘Speed of Risk’ Receives APEX Excellence Award

2019 Book by IIA CEO Richard Chambers Continues Award Streak

Speed of Risk CoverLAKE MARY, Fla. (July 21, 2020) — The Speed of Risk: Lessons Learned on the Audit Trail, an insightful look into managing today’s risk-filled environment, was awarded a 2020 APEX Award of Excellence in the category of Print Media – Books.

Published by the Internal Audit Foundation, the book has sold more than 7,000 copies since its release in early 2019, with a large portion of those copies in Simplified Chinese. Written by Richard F. Chambers, President and CEO of The Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA), The Speed of Risk offers insights gathered over Chambers’ more than 40-year career to equip internal auditors and their organizations with the wisdom to prevail in a turbulent environment. The book is Chambers’ third, and builds on his first release in 2014, Lessons Learned on the Audit Trail, which also was honored with the APEX award for writing.

Relevant in today’s COVID-19 challenged world, The Speed of Risk is rich with timeless anecdotes about the nature and pace of risk, stakeholder expectations, relationship acumen, disruption, culture and more. It aims to better prepare emerging internal audit leaders for career challenges and opportunities, by focusing on:

  • Perspectives that management and audit committees are reluctant to share.
  • How marketing internal audit can enhance awareness about its value.
  • Frequent sources of tension between management and internal audit.
  • The idea that internal auditors can audit anything – but not everything.
  • The importance of tact and the art of bringing about positive change.
  • How poor audit planning can cause “the wheels to come off” the engagement.
  • How smart internal auditors ask smart questions.
  • The need for ethical internal auditors to be courageous.

The APEX awards, which recognize publishers, editors, writers, and designers who create print, web, electronic, and social media, are based on excellence in graphic design, editorial content, and success “in achieving overall communications effectiveness and excellence.”
