Internal Auditor Magazine Wins Top Honors for Writing, Website

LAKE MARY, Fla. (July 24, 2019) — The Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA), the internal audit profession’s most widely recognized advocate, educator, and provider of standards, guidance, and certifications, announced today that its award-winning magazine for the profession, Internal Auditor, recently received several new honors for excellence in writing, editing, and design.

The magazine won six awards at the 2019 Florida Media Conference, held July 12 in St. Petersburg, Fla., including top “Charlie” awards for best feature writing and best magazine website in the category of trade/technical journals.

Recognized by judges for a Charlie Award was “Into the Light,” a provocative June 18, 2018, cover story by Russell A. Jackson on how organizations are addressing workplace harassment, particularly amid the #metoo movement. Editor Anne Millage also won a silver award for editorial/commentary/opinion for her related editor’s note, “Where Have All Our Heroes Gone?” which offered her personal observations “underscoring the professional role readers can play in investigating and addressing sexual abuse and misconduct,” according to one judge.

The other Charlie Award honored the magazine’s website, InternalAuditor.org, with one judge commenting: “While packed with information, this magazine site is easy to navigate and does not appear cluttered; the art and photos add to but don’t overwhelm the text.”

“Internal Auditor magazine is a must-read for internal audit professionals and their many stakeholders,” said IIA President and CEO Richard F. Chambers, CIA, QIAL, CGAP, CCSA, CRMA. “But it’s also model of journalistic excellence in any category, providing highly topical and compelling coverage on important trends and issues, such as the #metoo movement. I attribute its success and consistently high quality to an outstanding editorial staff of talented editors, writers, and designers.”

The magazine received additional silver awards at the Florida Media Conference for best overall writing in the association/trade/technical category, and for best design for its “Update” department (designer Joe Yacinski). And Internal Auditor earned a bronze award for best overall magazine in the trade/technical category.

The Charlie Awards are presented annually at the joint conference of the Florida Magazine Association, Florida Press Association, Florida Society of News Editors, and Florida Newspaper and Marketing Executives.

In June, the magazine received silver honors for design excellence during the national Association Media and Publishing’s Excel Awards, which recognized excellence and leadership in nonprofit association media, publishing, marketing, and communications.
