Internal Auditor Magazine Recognizes Outstanding Student

American University of Armenia undergrad addresses human impact on AI

LAKE MARY, Fla. (March 20, 2018) — Internal Auditor magazine, the world’s premier publication for the internal audit profession, announced today that it awarded a $1,000 scholarship to Marta Kotolyan, who is pursuing a bachelor’s degree at the American University of Armenia.

Kotolyan received the scholarship for her essay on issues that internal auditors should be aware of regarding the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in business.

Among seven key impacts surrounding the use of AI, the “human factor is the riskiest and hardest to be controlled,” Kotolyan wrote.

“Though AI is just a machine with its own intelligence,” she wrote, “that intelligence has been initially created by a human, over whom having a full control is hard to achieve. Intentionally or unintentionally, an AI can be programmed for personal benefit.”

Kotolyan’s full essay, chosen from among 31 entries by a panel of five internal audit professionals from The Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA) Publications Advisory Committee, Academic Relations Committee, and Committee of Research and Academic Advisors, can be viewed at www.internalauditor.org/scholarships.

The IIA supports internal audit career opportunities for college students through its Internal Audit Academic Awareness Program and the Internal Auditing Education Partnership (IAEP).
