IIA Presents Former President & CEO Richard Chambers with Bishop Lifetime Achievement Award

LAKE MARY, Fla. (16, June 2021) — The Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA), the internal audit profession’s widely recognized advocate, educator, and provider of standards, guidance, and certifications, has honored former IIA President and CEO Richard F. Chambers with the prestigious William G. Bishop III CIA Lifetime Achievement Award.

The Bishop award recognizes individual members who have shown extraordinary leadership and dedication over a lifetime of service to the global profession and The IIA. Through their accomplishments, recipients of this award have impacted the practice of internal auditing, advanced awareness of The IIA, and inspired professionals around the world to make a difference in the profession and organizations they serve.

Chambers served as President and CEO of The IIA for over 12 years. Respected as a champion for the internal audit profession, he has decades of internal audit and management experience. During the time he presided over The IIA, the organization reached record levels of membership, certifications, and conference attendance. It also launched several major initiatives, including the Certification in Risk Management Assurance and the Qualification in Internal Audit Leadership.

Chambers was instrumental in the development of several initiatives, including The IIA’s Audit Executive Center, the American Center for Government Auditing (now the Public Sector Audit Center), the Financial Services Audit Center, and the Environmental, Health & Safety Audit Center. He served on the Committee of Sponsoring Organizations of the Treadway Commission (COSO) Board of Directors and the International Integrated Reporting Council (IIRC). He has been ranked as one of the Most Influential People shaping the profession and as one of the most influential leaders in corporate governance. In addition, he has written four books on the profession, including the recent Agents of Change.

“Richard has dedicated his life to the profession — both as a volunteer and as the second-longest-serving leader of our global organization,” said IIA Global Chair Jenitha John. “It is my great pleasure to present him with this honor, a true testament to his outstanding service, exceptional impact, and dedication to internal audit.”

Chambers, who is currently Senior Internal Audit Advisor at AuditBoard, an IIA Principal Partner, received the award during The IIA’s 2021 International Conference, co-hosted by IIA-Singapore.
