IIA Honors 2007-08 Chairman Gerald Cox With Bishop Lifetime Achievement Award

LAKE MARY, Fla. (July 15, 2019) —The Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA), the internal audit profession’s most widely recognized advocate, educator, and provider of standards, guidance, and certifications, honors former IIA Global Chairman Gerald D. Cox (2007-08) with the prestigious William G. Bishop IIII, C-I-A Lifetime Achievement Award.

The award recognizes individual IIA members who, through a lifetime of accomplishments and dedication, positively impact the practice of internal auditing, advance awareness of The IIA, and inspire professionals around the world to make a difference in the profession and in the organizations they serve.

Cox received the award during The IIA’s 2019 International Conference in Anaheim, Calif. The conference, the premier gathering of internal auditors globally, attracted more than 2,700 people from around the world.

2018-19 IIA Global Chairman Naohiro Mouri honored Cox, CIA, QIAL, CRMA, for his four decades of service “raising the bar” on internal auditing. “Throughout his career, Gerry has not only spoken on behalf of the profession, but he has made it a point to listen to professionals talk about the challenges they are facing as well as the opportunities they see ahead,” Mouri said.

In addition to serving as IIA Global Chairman, Cox has a long list of accomplishments, including as president of IIA-UK & Ireland, as a member of The IIA’s Global Board and Executive Committee, and as chairman of The IIA’s Global Advocacy Committee and Professional Certifications Board. He also served on a number of IIA international committees and was president of the European Confederation of Institutes of Internal Auditing (ECIIA).

Last year, Cox received The IIA’s Bradford Cadmus Memorial Award for his exceptional volunteer service and contributions to the profession, specifically in the areas of research, education, publications.

Before his retirement earlier this year, Cox was CEO of Swap Internal Audit Services, a not-for-profit organization that, while focusing on internal audit, also offers a variety of independent business improvement and assurance services. Employing about 100 internal auditors, Swap provides internal audit services to a growing number of municipalities, government organizations, and private-sector clients throughout the United Kingdom and beyond.

The IIA’s Board of Directors formally established the William G. Bishop III, CIA Lifetime Achievement Award in December 2004. Bishop was president of The IIA from 1992 until his untimely death in 2004.
